Modifications to Heinz-Watties databases

Product Distribution, Customer Service Levels, Product Audit. These modifications required by Heinz-Watties were carried out under that companys software support contract with ABC Software. Rebuilding Access dbs into SQL Server was also a requirement.

Staff time management reports

This Access2000 database had been used by the company for some time as the main tool for its core business: to charge out developer hours. The addition of reports for time write-offs, time write-ons and accruals gave top management the tools to do so in a more sophisticated way. An invoicing module was also developed.

Design software release policy and methodology

Bell Gullys development environment was served by a development team split across two locations (Auckland and Wellington) and characterised by a highly demanding clientele. A rigorous procedure was needed for tracking work done by individual developers in individual projects, communicating that across the team, releasing test versions and certified production versions in a thoroughly controlled manner. I developed the communication procedures and the supporting database which ensured success in the eyes of all stakeholders.

Develop Microsoft Word templates for automatic document generation

Substantial efficiencies can be achieved by a law office if repetitive detail can be distributed across a set of documents in a sophisicated way. Using VBA as the principal tool, the development team was committed to this work across a range of legal areas. My particular contributions were in the areas of litigation and trademark registration.

Lead risk management project & statistical reporting for collaborative document management

Bell Gully had plans to serve out certain of its inhouse documents to BG clients. To implement such a project calls for the strictest management of permissions. My task was to develop a crawler that would examine the metadata associated with each document, report on the permissions allocated and signal any potentially dangerous combinations.

Participate in the migration to iManage document management technology from in-house DMS

Bell Gullys core busines is the proper handling of legal documents. Their DMS serves 3 million documents and to be able to share and manage these documents and their associated metadata is a high priority. An inhouse system had been developed relying on Word feature Custom Properties but a shift to iManage was desired with separate servers for the documents and their metadata. This was a major shift for 500 users and had to be achieved seamlessly. About 20 developers and operations staff were involved in this major exercise.

Technical lead in project for automated document generation

SpeedLegal document generation system is an XML based application. It delivers up a customised form of a document based on complex logics which in turn are based on the authors answers to the items in a custom questionnaire. My task was to construct the logics for a range of contracts needed by Bell Gully clients.

Brian Sampson came to me with a proposal for a software development that he had been told was impossible, but he believed could be done. The aim was to back-calculate the cost at which wool should be purchased, from a knowledge of what it could be sold for.

EnergyWise home grants fund improvements to the insulation of pre-1978 homes. A panel meets several times a year to allocate grants totalling $18m to selected providers.

LAN/WAN administration and User Support for two years

Enza Foods (called Frucor Processors while I was there) manufactures apple juice concentrate from apples that do not meet the requirements for export as solid fruit. They are highly computerised and in those days had 120 PC users and 60 PCs, in a 24-hour-a-day operation. My task was to keep the PCs, three LANs, one WAN and all the users, happy and productive.

Develop crop forecasting model

To be able mathematically to predict the arrival of different apple varieties and the size and quantity of the fruit, is the dream of every apple exporter. Enza sought to tap my mathematical and statistical abilities to build a working model in Excel.

Lead team producing training documentation for Storage and Inventory system

Enzas export of solid fruit is critically dependent upon the efficiency of its warehousing. The search for more efficient methods is ongoing, as is development of the inventory control system. Truck and forklift drivers have to be trained quickly and re-trained regularly (sometimes daily) as new procedures are developed and implemented.

Maintain & redevelop system for managing out-of-standard products

A certain proportion of the canned goods that Heinz-Watties produce, fails to meet original specification. The company deals with this in a variety of ways: re-labelling, alternative marketing, etc. etc. As a last resort they dump the product.

Develop and code user interfaces for rewriting the Inland Revenue Act

The IRD was rewriting the Inland Revenue Act, a 1600-page document which has 57 lawyers working on it simultaneously. They need ambitious version control over the thousands of individual fragments which make up this complex document.

Develop statistical tool to identify non-typical income tax return patterns

Inland Revenue assessment officials theorise that income levels should be capable of being statistically related to levels of business activity. This tool (using Excel as a user interface) enables officials to test that theory in a variety of business contexts and so identify potential targets for tax investigation.

Drivers Licence project. Design, coding in commercial licence area

The switch to credit card style drivers licenses had a high profile in NZ, especially in the light of the recent high profile failure of the Police INCIS system. I was contracted as part of the large Unisys development team for the project.

External Evaluation for Tertiary Education Providers

There are over 700 providers of tertiary education in NZ. To maintain their registration with NZQA they have to be assessed regularly by internal and external evaluators

Design and code user interfaces for capturing official parliamentary record (Hansard).

As part of the move to e-government, the proceedings of the House of Parliament (Hansard) are to be captured in a form suitable for publishing on the Web. My task was to create a front end that looked like a word processor but in reality was a data capture interface to a structured database.

Energy consumption audit

The seventy-plus parish buildings across the Diocese have a variety of arrangements for electricity and gas supply. This year-long project collected the consumption data with a view to re-designing the supply arrangements to reduce cost of supply and monitoring consumption.

Property inspection management

The Diocese owns all parish buildings but has not hitherto exercised any audit of their maintenance. A new system was sought, to achieve oversight and proactive management of these critical resources.

Synod papers system

To improve the efficiency of decision making at the annual Diocesan synod, a web-based vehicle was sought that would encourage the pre-publication and pre-discussion of synod papers. The result was a publication system with accompanying blogging facility using a combination of PDF and TXT presentations.

Cat-U-Log catalogue framework

A low-cost, content-oriented website framework which can be adapted to the modest needs of small retail businesses. Uses only two ASP pages and an SQL server database. Clients can maintain their own site using simple FTP freeware.
